Got to the beach hoping for a classic Bigbury NE wind funneling down the river with a decent swell. The amount of surfers out at low tide indicated that a lot of other people had the same idea, I counted 60 on the water!! The waves were coming in with the spray whipping off the top but this lulled me into thinking it was windier than it actually was.

I rigged a 5.2 thinking it would be enough to pump onto the waves and headed straight down to the river to launch amongst the surfers. Wobbled out and heli tacked to catch a set and the wind disappeared. Spent the next hour swimming more than sailing as the gusty wind kept deserting me. Managed to pull off one of those light wind waterstarts that Peter Hart was advocating in a recent article but the rest of the day was a disappointment. By this time more sailors had joined me but only one was planing (and only occasionally). Beautiful day but a bit of a let down with the wind.
